Within the realm of "Alchemists," two to four aspiring alchemists engage in a quest to unveil the mysteries of their mystical craft. Points can be accrued through various endeavors, with a significant portion hinging on the publication of accurate theories, presenting a formidable challenge.

The game unfolds over six rounds, with players determining their play order at the onset of each round. Opting for a later turn entails greater rewards.

Players articulate their actions by strategically positioning cubes on distinct action spaces, followed by the sequential assessment of each space. Advancing their knowledge involves blending ingredients and conducting experiments with the aid of a smartphone application (available on iOS, Android, and Windows), which introduces novel rules of alchemy for each game iteration. As an additional enhancement, players have the option to acquire magical artifacts to boost their endeavors. These artifacts, numbering nine and varying in each game, wield substantial power but come at a hefty cost. Nevertheless, when academic prestige is at stake, monetary concerns diminish in significance. Possessing these artifacts not only augments gameplay but also elevates one's standing within the alchemical community.

Players can increase their earnings by vending potions of questionable quality to adventurers; however, pecuniary gains are merely a means to an end. Indeed, the primary aspiration of alchemists transcends material wealth; their pursuit centers on garnering respect, typically achieved through the dissemination of groundbreaking theories.

Throughout gameplay, players' reputations oscillate. Following six rounds culminating in a final exhibition, reputation is transmuted into points. Points are also awarded for artifacts and grants secured. The denouement witnesses the revelation of alchemical secrets, with players either amassing or forfeiting points contingent on the veracity of their theories. Victory is claimed by the individual who emerges with the highest point total.
